Chapter Six

I frowned when I got back in my outer room the next morning, maybe my luck had run out as I’d spent it so liberally yesterday.

The sorcerer’s tower was eight levels and built into the palace itself, the only access points were on the first and second floors of the palace, the third through eighth floors had small slits for windows, and there might be an access point on the roof, I wasn’t sure.

Each room was an entire level, the outer circular staircase was separated by doors at each level. The stairwell itself accessed as I said, on the first or second floor by outer doors into the palace. Each stairwell ended at the floor above, so I had to travel through the room to the other door to access the next flight up. No doubt a security consideration in a siege.

I’d checked out the first six levels that morning, or the third through sixth really, since I saw the first two yesterday during my visit. The second floor had been that sitting room for guests, and the third floor was a dining area, so I’d just kept going. The fourth floor had been filled with various equipment stored for a siege, including weapons, but also large and sealed casks of wine and dried out fruits and meats.

The fifth floor had more protections on it, telling me it was likely the start of his personal area he didn’t let others in, save maybe a select servant to keep it clean. I slipped through those as easily as I had the outer defenses around the tower walls. Anyway, the fifth floor had been an alchemical laboratory and kitchen.

The sixth floor was a bathing chamber, likely his private one.

The seventh floor is where I’d stopped, without even opening the door I could hear him snoring on the other side of it, which was where the problem came in. I hadn’t exhaustively searched the rooms, but I didn’t have to, the dimensions were straightforward, and it was a relatively small tower in width. There were no secret rooms or alternate ways to reach the next floor.

If the seventh floor was his bedroom, then the eighth floor was his library and research room. To get at the information I needed to understand how to bypass his protections, I’d have to sneak past him while he was asleep in bed, opening two doors, which would be incredibly risky. I could do it, but it would take almost the entire fifteen minutes and I’d be gone from my post far too long with more search time added to that.

Which put me in a difficult situation. I had a few options.

I could try to climb the tower and ingress from the top, there was no doubt a trap door. That would be even riskier than tiptoeing past the sleeping man. I’d not only have to worry about the guard posts outside seeing me climb the tower in the pre-dawn light, but the guards posted on the palace’s exits couldn’t fail to see me go outside.
